Dive program (Update) (28/08/2010)
Brian want you to know the following:
The Weymouth weekend, 11th and 12th September, still has four (possibly five) places left, always a great weekend on a great dive boat with skipper Woody. If you are interested please contact Hajo as both Brian and Paul are away on holiday.
The Plymouth weekend, 25th and 26th September, has been canceled due to lack of support (only three divers were booked).

Brain (Expedition Officer)
Hemihelp day (Update) (26/08/2010)

Hello Grahame I am very sorry to have left this until the very last minute as I know it takes time to organise and get your team together and juggling other commitments. We have been a little unlucky this year with our dates and I have been hesitant to complete the fun day. We will definitely do another fun day as we love the event so. So sorry, I hope you are both really well and please send me thanks to all your committed team. Kind regards SandyIce diving Expedition 2012 (25/08/2010)
Dear all,
I am making moves towards booking an ice diving extravaganza for us in early February 2012, while I realise that this is a long way off I am trying to get it at 2011 prices rather than 2012 prices. Prices at the moment range from 1545 to 1845 (ouch)!
Please take a look at the attached document and let me know if you are interested. The more people that come along the bigger a discount I can blag.
Before you make your decision and let me know whether you would like to come along consider the following:
- You need to be experienced in dry suit diving (the center recommends neoprene dry suits).
- This will be a very cold experience, travel to and from the site will be by snowmobile you will need dry gloves or 5mm mitts.
- Entry into the water will be one at a time through a hole cut in the ice., although all divers will be roped you need to have enough confidence to make your way back to the entry point as you will not be able to break through five feet of ice to get to the surface.
- We will be diving in a remote location away from recompression facilities.
The attached information is for a ten day trip with four days diving and one day with beluga whales, I can arrange a shorter (still four days diving but only five nights accommodation and no beluga whales) trip for 1550-1650 (the 1650 includes a two day ice diving course, I don’t think that this is compulsory but I will check).
At this point I am only looking at numbers of people who would be interested; you would not be making a commitment at this point.
Have a look at the document (White Sea Diving) and let me know by email within one month if you are interested, then I’ll look at deposits etc.

Swimathon 16th of October (23/08/2010)
We will again be supporting the Woking Rotary Club Swimathon event this year on October 16th at Woking Pool in the Park.
As before we will be doing it with scuba gear. (no motorised equipment allowed)
I have confirmed our attendance by booking 2 lanes.
The first session starts at 2.00 pm till 3pm and then 3.00 pm till 4.00 pm
The event lasts one hour each session, and the object is to swim the most lengths in relays.
Each team consists of up to six people.
Sponsorship forms will be available to all 12 people.
See website for more details of event www.rotarywoking.co.uk
We currently have a couple of spare places if anyone is interested
There are current 10 members who have commited to the event
Let me know if there is enough interest in setting up another team of six or just to fill the two places left, and I might be able to get another lane booked.
I need to complete the booking process by Friday this week as I’m on holiday for 2 weeks after that.
Brian (Expedition Officer)
Night Dive (Update) (27/08/2010)
Hi All,
I‘m sorry to tell you that the night dive planned for Tuesday 31st August has had to be cancelled due to the unavailability of one of the RIBs and a doubtful weather forecast.
If it can be re-scheduled later in the season I will let you know.
Regards,
Grahame
Night dive 18/08/2010
Fancy a night dive?
Bet you can’t remember when you did the last one, or perhaps you’ve never done one! Here’s your chance.
Chris and Mick are organising one on Tuesday 31st August, with two RIBs out from Langstone Harbour.
Ropes off will be 7.45 pm for a dive time around 9.00 pm.
Night dives are exciting and are never that deep.
The planned depth can be adjusted to match the qualifications of those on board so this dive is open to everyone.
Give your name to Chris or Mick if you want a place, either on Thursday or email them instead
Regards,
Grahame
Underwater Search (Update) (10/08/2010)
The response to Mick’s call for help to look for a sunken model boat was rather disappointing, and in the event only two other divers assisted.
Conditions were not good; deep silt and absolute zero visibility.
A blacked out mask would have made no difference.
However, I am pleased to say that these three very experienced divers using highly sophisticated underwater search techniques were able to locate and retrieve the model boat.
The owner was delighted and promptly wrote a cheque for £80 as a donation to the club.
He said the boat was worth £750!
The club received another donation recently as at very short notice the RIB was used to scatter someone’s ashes at sea.
Regards,
Grahame
Underwater Search (03/08/2010)
Dear All
We have been asked if any one would like to look for a model racing boat which has sunk in a lake in Thorpe
It is only about 4-6 mtrs deep and the owner thinks he knows were it is ??
He needs it back to use in the World championships in Sept so it sounds like he is in need of help.
Could be used as a training dive to carry out a search.
If any one fancies helping out contact me
Thanks
Mick

Hi all,
I would like to ask you a few questions about the Surrey Aquanauts website.

RIB Diving Programme 2010 02/08/2010
Dear all!,
You will know that we have a club boat, and that it is ideal for a cheeky dive on the weekend.
We also have a programme set for the year in advance so that you can plan accordingly.
Please see attached poster (Surrey Aquanauts RIB – 2010) for more information on the club RIB, or get in touch with Mick on Thursdays or by email.
Do try and see if you can get out and use this fantastic resource that we as a club own!
Kind regards
Christian

Instructors needed for Thursday lectures! 31/07/2010
Dear Instructors,
You are all qualified to deliver theory lectures?
You will know that there are five club members doing the dive leader course. Half of the lectures are done (with a few catch ups required), and we would like to pencil in the next few Thursdays to do the remaining lectures.
Could you please let me know your availability over the next few Thursdays, if you are able to please do a lecture. We are looking to do one lecture at a time, but if there are two short chapters, then I’m sure they can be done together. We therefore need lectures for the following nights:
5 Aug
12 Aug
19 Aug
26 Aug
2 Sep
9 Sep
Please just indicate your availability. I will advise what lecture is required well in advance.
With thanks and regards,
Christian (Training Officer)
Dive Bookings (Update) (28/07/2010)

REMINDER Surrey Aquanauts Picnic – 01 August 2010 (30/07/2010)

Hope to see you there.

Scout Try Dives (09/07/2010)
Dear All,
Just a quick note to say a massive thank you to all those that helped out with the Scout/Explorer Try Dive evenings over the last two weeks.
It was a great group effort and all the Scouts seemed to enjoy themselves and didn’t want to get out.
Without your help we can’t run these evenings that help to bring in much needed funds and potential new members. For those newer members it’s worth noting that you don’t have to be an Instructor to get involved, there are plenty of background and non instructor roles to assist with such as admin, equipment, marshalling or assisting with the kitting up/de-kitting of the Try Divers.
Apologies to the swimmers who were squashed into one lane but I’m sure you understand why that was necessary with so many divers in the water at once.
Once again many thanks for making the effort to attend and help in any way you could.
Regards
Peter
Reactions from the scouts:
Dear Sally and Peter, Will you please pass on our very grateful Thanks to your team, the Explorers (and Leaders!) had a wonderful time and left both sessions on a real high…… Quite an achievement where teenagers are concerned.I will pass on the details you sent and hopefully between us, we may have inspired some to take it up properly. I will also circulate it to other neighbouring groups so you may be getting some more enquiries soon. Kind Regards Linda
Mid Week Dive (21/06/2010)
Hi All,
I am planning a midweek dive down in Swanage on Wednesday 7th July, there are currently 5 divers interested.
If you would like to join me the details are as follows;
Skipper is Martin from Swanage Divers on his hard boat Mary Jo which leaves from the pier
Boat has a lift.
The schedule for the day is ropes off at 12:25 (slack is 12:45) and depending on numbers, the dive will be one of the local wrecks i.e Kyarra, followed by lunch and then a dive under the pier in the afternoon.
The wreck dive will be Sports Diver and above while the pier dive will be Ocean diver. These are not training dives, just a midweek bimble for those of us who have yet to dive in the UK this year.
The cost of the boat is either £20 or £22 if we go out further, while under the pier is free, although there is a cost for accessing the pier (see below). There is a dive shop on the pier that does air fills, so you could top up between dives should you need to.
The pier is owned by a trust, so there is a charge for access. You can also park your car within the confines of the pier and there is a cost of £6 a car for the day + £2 per diver. However, you need to be early to get a space. Alternatively, there is a public car park close by, so you can unload your gear first. The pier also has a small cafe + there are toilets and showers.
Incidently, although it is only a few metres deep beneath the pier, there is plenty of life and the site is featured as one of the top 10 UK dive sites!
I’m planning to make a day of it, by getting to the pier early and bagging a spot and if the weather is nice, relaxing on the beach prior to the boat dive, followed by a surface interval (lunch), a bimble under the pier, then a quick change and then stopping off on the way home for a pie and a pint.
If you would like to join me or require further details, please e-mail me, places will be limited, so please contact me by this Friday 25th June.
I will need a £10 deposit please.
Regards,
David
Scapa Flow 26th of September (11/06/2010)
Hi All
Tim is organising a one week trip to Scapa Flow, diving Sunday 26th September for six days. The cost for self-catering accommodation (excluding food) plus diving is approximately £260. Cost of travel is extra. Many of the dives are within Sports Diver range but some would be restricted to Dive Leader or above.
The dive boat is ‘MV Triton’, an excellent dive boat which we have used for many, many years (see www.mvtritoncharters.co.uk)
Tim has some spaces left due to cancellations for diving related problems (some of you will have heard about these!).
If you are interested, or would like more information, please telephone Tim or see him in the pub.

Surrey Aquanauts day of fund raising 10/04/2010
On Saturday the 10th off april 2010, members of Surrey Aquanauts, our local scuba diving club, were active in Woking town centre. Twenty members kindly gave up their time to collect money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). This independent charity does not receive any funding from the UK government and is totally funded by voluntary donations. They managed to raise a staggering £855.66 towards keeping the charity afloat (pardon the pun). Throughout Woking, a total of nearly £3000 was raised that day. Club members Mick Iles and Chris Knights (pictured with Paul Bassett and Alkie Brindley) brought the club dive Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) into Mercia Walk, leading into the town square. It caused a lot of interest, particularly with the mothers and fathers with children, who happily clambered aboard. Along side, an exhibition of exciting and dramatic underwater photographs were on display, all taken by club members.
Since it’s foundation, the RNLI has saved over 139,000 lives on the high seas, a remarkable achievement. Joined by the RNLI local representative, John Tytherleigh , they happily spent the wonderful spring day amongst the shoppers collecting for this essential worthy cause. The club meets and trains every Thursday at The ‘Pool in The Park’ in Woking at 21:00 and socialises at The Cricketers Pub in Horsell afterwards. For further information, telephone: 0800 0186431 or email: info@surreyaquanauts.org.uk.
If you would like to meet them again, they will be holding another Get to Know Surrey Aquanauts event at Heathervale Park, Heathervale Road, New Haw KT15 3AN, on 19th & 20th of June of this year. Jo Granger, Chairperson of Surrey Aquanauts and Nick Galt, Diving Officer, would like to thank all those who helped to raise such a terrific amount and to the generous people of Woking who donated so much to the RNLI .
The story can also be found on the Dive Magazine website.

The Club rib will be attending thanks to Mick, and Chris will be displaying some of his historic dive gear.
Please can you email me, Brian with any commitment to the event that you can give and I will communicate directly with you with full details of what we need help with.

RIB Dive – Sunday 9th May (01/05/2010)
Mick is taking the RIB out next Sunday. If you would like to dive please let him know.

Scouts Try Dives (01/05/2010)
An Adventure Scout group have approached us to do two consecutive weeks of try dives on the 1st and 8th of July. They will have 8 try-divers (possibly 10 if the scout leaders join in) in each group. The last Scout group we did we were able to buddy them up and have two to each instructor but obviously the more instructors I can get the better. So I need volunteers for the following:
Pool instructors – as many as possible please
Pool marshals – 2
Equipment helpers – 2 to assist Brian and Paul
In water photographer – 1
I believe Steve and Jo are away as am I so we’re already three instructors down so please don’t assume someone else can do it. The sooner I can confirm that we have the instructors the sooner I will be able to confirm the dates with the scout leader. I will also need someone to volunteer to take on the organisation of the evenings and liaison with the scout leader as I will be on holiday for both of these dates.
Many thanks
Nick

Dear Fellow Scuba Diver,
My name is Kelsey Johansen, and I am a graduate student in the School of Outdoor
Recreation, Parks and Tourism at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Canada. As
apart of my Masters thesis, entitled The Effectiveness of Environmental
Communication with Scuba Divers: A Case Study Comparing the Curricula of BSAC,
PADI, and SSI Open Water Diver Certification Courses, I am surveying certified
scuba divers about their knowledge of low impact diving practices.
To help me out with this, I am asking you to fill out a questionnaire,
accessible by the link below, which will take approximately 5 – 8 minutes to
complete and is made up of:
1) a broad set of questions about scuba diving and marine environments,
2) a section about your recent diving experiences and
3) a set of questions about you, and your certifications.
If you are under the age of 18 please do not take part in this study!
Your participation is completely voluntary and you are free to refrain from
answering any questions or to withdraw from the survey at any time. All
questionnaires will be kept confidential and all data will be analyzed in
statistical form to assure your anonymity.
As a member of the diving community, you know how important preserving dive sites is, so please take the time to fill out this short survey!
The following link will take you to the survey:

Thank you for your time, and if you know of anyone else who may be interested in taking this survey, please feel free to forward this email to them.
Sincerely,
Kelsey Johansen

Thanks for organising the talk and getting such a great audience together. I always enjoy giving the talks to Dive Clubs as they are always receptive, interested and have a few experiences to share. Thanks so much for the donation, its a great help and the reason why I do the talks – to raise funds/members for the trust. As I said please pass on my contact details if anyone has any further questions or queries and please contact the Shark Trust office if we can work with you in any of your activities.
Many thanks,

There is also the option of doing the Advanced Instructor, and the prerequisites are:
1) BSAC member,
2) Advanced Diver and
3) Open Water Instructor.
I know it’s short notice, but the dates are from 19 to 26 March 2010.
The cost for either event is £550. This includes accommodation, diving, BSAC course packs and tuition. Not included are, equipment, flights, transfers and food.
Anyone interested should contact Dennis.

Dive Training 2010 (31/01/2010)
Dear All,
I need your help please to set up a programme of training for the year.
We intend to do a Dive Leader course this year, so if you are interested in progressing your training to this level, please let me know so that I can get an idea of how many people wish to do the course. I hope to start this in March/April. Also, if there are existing Dive Leaders or Advanced divers who wish to re-cap on the theory side, you are of course more than welcome to attend the lectures.
Also, if anybody is an Ocean Diver and would like to progress to Sports Diver, please let me know too. Sports Diver is a very good qualification and you can then attend most of the dive weekends planned.
Finally, there are some people who are in the middle of training, and I ask you to please get in touch so that we can finish your training off. Ideally we can finish all the theory and pool lessons before the spring/summer, and then do all the open water dives when it warms up again. PLEASE DON’T WAIT FOR ME TO CONTACT YOU!!!!!!!
If you are interested in any of the above, or are currently in the middle of a course, email me now or call me to avoid disappointment!!!
Hope to hear from you soon.
Christian (Training Officer)

· More still to be announced
There’s also the exhibition and great free prize draw with a Suunto HelO2 trimix capable dive computer as first prize.

Tomorrow evening’s pool session is CANCELLED (06/01/2010)
A happy New Year to one and all!
Tomorrow evening’s pool session is CANCELLED owing to the weather conditions. The Pool and Leisure Centre closed at 6.30 pm this evening and is likely to do the same tomorrow. Coupled with severe driving conditions it seems sensible to take this decision now rather than at the last minute.
No doubt the pub will still be open and welcome those who can make it.

New Year’s Day Dive (23/12/2009)
Hi everyone
As always there is the opportunity to start the New Year as you mean to continue with a New Year’s Day Dive.
Meet at 10.00 AM at Littleton Lake.
Nick has agreed to do gate duty from 10.00 to 10.30 am. If you arrive after that and cannot gain entry please call his mobile 07802 222 981 and someone will come to let you in.
Afterwards we meet in the Three Horseshoes pub in Laleham for some light refreshment. (Turn right out of Littleton, left at the T junction and it is on the right hand side after about 1 km.)
Any questions – give Nick a ring.
Regards,
Grahame
